Natural Horsemanship?

A bunch of people at my barn (the ones involved with horses for five years or less) do this thing where they shake the leadrope while it’s connected to the horses’ halter and the horse backs up.  I’ve found that this is the Yo-Yo exericse ala Parelli.
Those same people also do this thing on a [...]

Step 1

Breathe.  OK, done.
This was the first weekend in a very long time that no running around was involved.  On Saturday I wore my pjs all day and cleaned my grosser-than-gross kitchen from the walls to the floor to everything in between.  Brig’s lessee rode in the AM (short rides, long and low) and I told [...]

Wit’s End

I don’t know what to do.
When I purchased Brig, he did have some attitude problems and he did not like to be groomed.  But, underneath that tough exterior, he was kind, willing and lovable.  And I thought he was pretty.  So, I bought him.
Once at the new place, he was pretty much the same.  Under [...]

Catching Up

I’ve been busy at work — good thing!
My personal life has been way too busy though.  Fall is a sucky time.  J coaches K’s soccer team and we drive all over hell and back every Saturday for her games.  It’s a stressful time because J is competitive, but his team of 11 year old girls [...]

Sore, but fine.

As the post says, I’m sore, but a-okay.
The barn was quiet last night as the boarders hauled out to go gaming or cow-something-or-other.  I don’t know exactly what it was.  But, it was nice.  I didn’t ride because my neck is a tad stiff, but I did lunge with the Vienna reins.  It’s been awhile.  [...]

Dumped!

For the first time in many, many years, I was dumped by a horse.
It was all very slow motion, I know exactly what happened, when, why and how.  I can replay it in my head like a movie.
First, there was the horse outside of the arena banging his hoof on the metal barn because he [...]

New Shoes

Brig got new shoes last night.
I love it when the farrier comes.  Brig is so cute when he’s getting his feet done.  And so well-behaved.  We’re worried about a weak spot on Brig’s front left foot.  And he’s got some major flares going on.  Stupid Thoroughbred feet!
I didn’t ride because I had things to do [...]

So Far, So Good

My lessee rode last night, cleaned Brig’s stall and fed him.  I haven’t been to the barn yet but everything seemed to go pretty smooth.  It sounded like Brig left his attitude at the gate this time around and they had a nice ride.
There is a new horse at the barn who was taught to [...]

Monday

I rode, rode and rode on Friday night due to an unplanned long trip to the barn.  Details I won’t go into because the details really aren’t pleasant.  I was blissfully alone in the arena, no one but me and my (mostly) trusty steed.  His canter work is going really well, but his trot is [...]
